Road

The PARC municipalities are well connected with the region and are strategically positioned as the gateway to northern Manitoba with two of the three available highways located in the PARC region.  The PTH# 83 on the west of the Duck Mountain and PTH# 10 on the east of the Duck Mountain provide reliable year round service to and from northern Manitoba.  The PTH# 5 is an interprovincial trade route for the movement of goods between Manitoba and Saskatchewan.  All PTH# 5, 10 and 83 are provincially designated RTAC (Roads & Transportation Assoc of Canada) highways for commercia.0l weighted trucks.

Commercial Trucking Companies

Several long-distance trucking companies operate in the region.  Many of Canada’s trucking companies have regional or head offices in nearby Winnipeg which provides for a selection of 360 for-hire motor carriers many of whom provide service to the area such as Gardewine, Trans-X, Kindersley Transport, Paul’s Hauling, RTM Transport, Ushkowski Trucking, Penner International and many local well established trucking firms.  Canadian National Railway (CN) has intermodal service to transport ocean containers to all destinations in Manitoba in order to provide seamless movement of goods.  Containers can be delivered on a trailer chassis and left for loading.  CN will pick-up the loaded container(s) for transloading in Winnipeg.

International Border Crossing

The Canada / United States Border Crossing at Emerson, Manitoba is the 2nd busiest crossing in Western Canada and the 8th busiest in Canada.  Approximately $14 billion in annual value of trade goes through the Emerson / Pembina crossing with about 11% increase in commercial entries between 2000 and 2004.  About 75% of Manitoba's road exports to NAFTA partners (United States and Mexico) are routed through the Emerson / Pembina crossing.

The Emerson crossing is available for commercial and traveler services 24/7.  As a designated commercial and export office, the accounting and payment process is streamlined for better service.  This port also offers electronic data interchange for Accelerated Commercial Release Operations Support System (ACROSS) and Free And Secure Trade (FAST) services where dedicated lanes are available for FAST clearances.

Information out the Canada Border Services Agency can be obtained through the Border Information Services at 800-461-9999 or 204-983-3500.

Air Service

There are four airports located in the PARC municipalities.  Barker Airport, just south of the City of Dauphin is a fully service airport with all weather capabilities, refueling and an aircraft maintenance hanger.  The paved runways of 2,750 and 5,000 feet have enabled Barker Airport to land various aircraft including a military Hercules transport plane and a 737 commercial plane.

Roblin Airport’s 3,200 foot paved night-lite runway was constructed in 1995 to service the needs of private and commercial aircraft in the area.

Gilbert Plains and Grandview airports have well maintained grassed runways that are important to the agricultural companies who use them year round.  For regional air service call Perimeter Airlines at (800) 665-8986 or (204) 638-7019.

Rail

The Canadian National Railway (CN) Secondary Mainline runs through the heart of the PARC municipalities with more than 50,000 railcars annually and is known as the Togo route.  Existing rail sidings remain in the communities of Dauphin, Grandview, Hillsburg and Roblin.  The railway is an essential partner for adding value to the regions resources.  There are three rail links to the United States from Winnipeg.

CN maintains their transloading facility for Manitoba in Winnipeg for the movement of ocean containers.   Customers are drop shipped ocean containers for loading and once filled are picked up and transported to the transloading facility in Winnipeg, where they are loaded on a railcar destined for the port.  There are several rail sidings that will accommodate the local loading of flat deck railcars.

Passenger service is also available through VIA Rail Services.  The Hudson Bay Route and the Canadian Route provide services through the communities to destinations between in Churchill, Manitoba and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Seaports

The seaport at Churchill on the Hudson Bay is capable of accommodating Panamax (up to 60,000 tonne capacity) class vessels.  The port ships more than 1 million tonnes of grain (90% of traffic) and provides uncongested quick direct service to Europe (3,380 nautical miles to Liverpool) through the northern sea route.  The Port of Churchill is the only deep-water ocean port in the Prairie region.  The shipping season is between July and November with governments discussing ice-breaking assistance with other northern countries, which will extend the shipping season.
